This milonga was the place to be in 2004-2006 but it still brings alot of people. The crowd is generally older, over 40 and up; but brings in young salon dancers when there are special performances. On the nights when there are homage to a special dancer or multiple exhibitions, it gets really packed with good dancers (young and old), friends of performers, tourists, and, of course, the regulars. The milonga has 2 dance floors and many tables to accommodate the crowd - make a reservation. At the end of the night, everyone moves in to the main room in the front. The vibe is really friendly but with very Argentine milonga codigos - nice dress is a must! El Beso crowd rolls in after 2 or 3 when Cachirulo milonga (3 blocks away) finishes up; but I believe you still have to pay to get in to Porteno even if you come at the last hour. Some people choose to go to Canning which a 10 min taxi ride away and lets you in free after 3am. As every milonga in Buenos Aires, they have plenty of wine, champagne, beer, and simple mixed drinks. Cafe Academia is one block away if you want to go for desauyno after a night of dancing.
